Siddhantam – Surya Siddhanta

Surya Siddhanta

Aryabhattiyam

Aryabhata : Indian Mathematician & Astronomer – The forgotten Genius.

He was born on 21st March 476 C.E. Very little is known about his personal life and all his works has been forgotten by world. All we know is he invented zero, but he invented lot of other aspects of mathematics and astronomy. This topic is all about discovering his contributions to the world.

Works of Aryabhata

  • Aryabhattiya – Astronomy & Mathematics Scriptures
  • Arya Siddhanta – Mathematical Concepts involved in Astronomical Calculations. Now lost and got destroyed.
  • AI Nanf – This is also lost scriptures.

Aryabhattiya is only scriptures which is available and preserved.

Aryabhattiya

Aryabhattiya is just 121 slokas written in Sanskrit language – a powerful language system which has ability to condense lot of details into shorter text.

Gitikapada

  • Fundamentals of Mathematics
  • Explains about methods of writing numbers.
  • Focuses on Units of Measurements of Time
  • It explains calculations of Earth’s rotations

Ganitapada

  • Geometrical Principles
  • Arithmetic Progressions
  • Inderminate Equations.

Kalakriyapada

  • Measurement of Time
  • Determining Planetary Positions
  • Determining Days of Week
  • Foundation of Physics

Goladapada

  • As the name suggests, it deals with Earth
  • Trigonometric Principles
  • Motions of Planets
  • Geospatial Computations

Key Contributions of Aryabhata

  • Writing Numbers as Alphabets
  • Infinite Series of PII
  • Approximate Value of PII
“100 added 4, multiplied by 8 and added 62,000: this is the approximate circumference of a circle whose diameter is 20,000”
    PII = 62,832 / 20,000 = 3.1416
  • Calculating area of circle without using PII
“Half of the Circumference when multiplied by Half of Diameter exactly gives areas of the Circle”
Area of Circle = ½ Circumference x Radius
  • Classification of Time
Kalpa = 1 day of Brahma, 14 subunits of time – 14 Manvantaras
Each Manvantaras has 72 yugas cycles
Each Yuga has thousands of years.
    Krutha Yuga = 1,728,000 Years
    Thretha Yuga = 1,296,000 Years
    Dwapara Yuga = 864,000 Years
Kali Yuga = 432,000 Years à Current Period
  • Invented SINE Function
JYA (Sanskrit) > JIBA (Persian) > SINUM (Latin) > SINE (English)
  • Place Value of System & Zero
He gave place value system. One of the best contributions of India to World.
  • Demystified Eclipses
“Moon is like Water; Sun is like Fire. Moon obstructs Sun and Shadow of the Earth obstructs Moon causing Eclipses”
  • And much more…

Key Elements of Aryabhata

  • Solving Inderminate Equations
  • Square & Cube Roots
  • Areas of Geometrical Shapes
  • Time Consumption across Earth
  • Arithmetic Progressions
  • Calculating Orbits of Planets
  • Diameters of Planets & Cycles
  • Speed, Distance & Time
  • Planet Obliquity Calculations
  • Apogee & Perigee Calculations
